Sagittarius Eclipse: A New Power Emerges

A partial solar eclipse will occur on November 25, 2011 at 2°37′ Sagittarius. This will be the last of four partial solar eclipses in 2011; the others occurred on January 4, June 1, and July 1, 2011. With the North Node of the Moon, the Head of the Dragon, moving through the middle degrees of Sagittarius, we are now reaching the culmination of a period where the Sagittarius archetype is being torn open, erupting its dark shadow contents and forcing the entire world to see them. I say this because an eclipse is essentially a rip in the fabric of time, and eclipses at the Head of the Dragon represent something new coming into our awareness that we must struggle to integrate.

The North Node represents the evolutionary path forward. The North Node is also, and more appropriately, called the Ascending Node, because it is where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun (ecliptic) going upward. It is thus interpreted as “where we are going” or “what we are here for.” It represents a place where something previously below (consciousness) now rises up. Just as the Sun crosses the horizon at dawn, something now is piercing the main plane of existence (ecliptic) in an upward manner, struggling to become manifest.

Systems theory can help us make a little more sense of this. (1) As living organisms, people (and arguably nations and civilizations) are open systems: they cannot survive without continuously exchanging matter and energy with their environment. This interaction has two components: input, i.e., that which enters the system from the outside, and output, i.e., that which leaves the system for the environment. The transformation of input into output by the system is usually called throughput.

Since Sagittarius is the sign where North Node eclipses are occurring now, the Sagittarius house cusp in any chart will be an area where new energy, feelings, and ideas are trying to enter. This is the input into the system. The input of an eclipse is basically added psychic energy, which stirs the pot and makes any energetic blockages in the organism more apparent.

The throughput aspect of this process is our own personal responsibility to maintain awareness of these blockages as they come up, and to begin the internal work required to remove them. If our throughput processing is even minimally successful, the output will be an ability to let go of blockages and live with greater ease and a more healthy and enhanced expression of both houses on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis.

In his excellent article earlier this year, Austin Coppock brilliantly described the basic function of this axis in terms of the alchemical formula Solve et Coagula, that is, separate and join together. (2) The basic function of Gemini is to fracture the One in order to see its different facets. Sagittarius then re-unites these fragments just as the centaur physically unites the animal/instinctive body of the horse with the rational/logical head of the human.

When understood this way, the location of the Great Attractor in Sagittarius makes even more sense, because gravity pulls things together. (3) This also seems to re-affirm the Sibly chart for the U.S. because Sagittarius is consistent with the idea of E Pluribus Unum — out of many, One. However, given the continuous difficulty of achieving any kind of true unity in this country, the Scorpionic America chart, put forth by David Solte, also seems appropriate. (4) Rather than falling on the horizon axis (as in the Sibly chart), Gemini/Sagittarius forms the vertical axis of this chart. The Sagittarius Midheaven signifies something we aspire to, rather than something we embody. In the Solte Scorpionic America chart, this eclipse could be viewed as a wake-up call regarding the realism of those aspirations to unity.

With Sagittarius on an angle in both the Sibly and Solte charts, it is no surprise that the U.S. is receiving a wake-up call from the Occupy Wall Street movement (OWS). Contrary to mainstream media accusations that they lack a clear message, the basic message of the OWS movement has always been: We are the 99%.

You might ask: what does it mean to be the 99%? It is an established fact that income inequality in this great country has steadily increased for more than three decades. We are one of only a few developed countries where this is true. A Congressional Budget Office study in 2011 found that incomes of the top 1% increased about 275% in the period between 1979 and 2007, while all lower income levels lost their share of national income. (5) Put simply, for almost the entire life of this author, the 1% have been getting filthy rich while the 99% have been getting poorer. Unless you are a billionaire like Michael Bloomberg, or the average millionaire congressperson, I can’t see why that is anything to wave a flag about. Nor should it come as any surprise that many find this intolerable. I remember my undergrad sociology professor citing the basic sociological fact that when the gap between the rich and poor is stable, no matter how large, it is tolerated, but when the gap grows, revolutions occur. In other words, economic injustice and greed breed revolutions.

It also seems very fitting that Jupiter, the ruler of the North Node of the Moon in Sagittarius, is currently transiting Taurus, as there is such a spotlight on economic injustices. The question remains whether we can heal the division between the 99% and the 1% and bring economic unity back to this country. Perhaps the chart of the Saros Series, to which the November 25, 2011 partial solar eclipse belongs, can tell us something about that potential.

Eclipses happen in families or series, and a new member emerges about every 18 years. This is the Saros cycle, first discovered by Babylonian astronomer/astrologers more than two millennia ago. Solar eclipses with very similar characteristics repeat every 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours; these eclipses are then part of the same family, or Saros Series. Any two eclipses separated by one Saros cycle (i.e., 6,585.3 days) share very similar geometries. They occur at the same node with the Moon at nearly the same distance from earth, and at the same time of year.

The current eclipse belongs to Saros Series 123, the last two of which occurred in November 1993 and 1975. This series is made up of 70 eclipses, and the current partial solar eclipse is number 53. The birth chart for this series — dated April 9, 1074 — is an eclipse in the middle degrees of Taurus, at the cross-quarter point between the vernal equinox and summer solstice. (6) The ruler of the eclipse, Venus, is near the vernal equinox point of 0° Aries, also called the Mundane or World Axis. Since eclipses in this series have important points on the World Axis, this series will have pronounced socio-political effects.

In the 1074 chart, there is also a t-square in the early degrees of the mutable signs (i.e., Mars in Pisces, Saturn in Sag, Mercury and Neptune in Gemini).  The current eclipse, at 2°37′ Sagittarius, resonates strongly with this chart. This suggests the current member of this Saros Series could be carrying a particularly potent version of the family story, which is about initiating big (cardinal) changes (mutable).

The chart for the November 25, 2011 partial eclipse echoes the birth chart of the series in a few important ways. (7) The ruler of this eclipse, Jupiter, is in Taurus, the sign of the first eclipse of this series. Also the mutable t-square in early degrees is again present, this time between the Sun and Moon, Mars, and Chiron.

Within these commonalities we can form some reasonable expectations. The Taurus theme tells us it is appropriate to focus on economic issues. Furthermore, Jupiter is part of a loose earth grand trine with Mars and Pluto. With all three planets being somewhat near their stations, we know this grand trine will be re-visited. This will happen in mid March 2012 when Mars squares the Lunar Nodes. I suspect March will be a major culmination of the energies that are beginning to gather steam now.

In the short term, this partial solar eclipse is followed in two weeks by a total lunar eclipse. Both eclipses occur during Mercury retrograde. As I suggested earlier this year the Mercury retrogrades in the fire element, along with a total lunar eclipse in air, are going to once again further invigorate the current global conflagrations. When Mercury crossed the North Node on November 15, the NYPD evicted the Occupiers. This has only served to strengthen their resolve, and now the protests are spreading onto college campuses. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with OWS at the next two passes of Mercury over the North Node and the Great Attractor, in retrograde motion on December 2nd and in direct motion on December 26th. I have noticed a history of Mercury being active in the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) events. Stay tuned for more on that in two weeks, when I cover the coming total lunar eclipse.

  1. Excellent- I like your use of systems theory in explaining the Gemini/Sagittarius axis. It reminds me of what happens through the Creative Process- where a problem is analyzed- broken down into its parts and then Synthesis occurs- when we understand all the pieces and how they work together. In the end the Whole is greater than its parts.

The Scorpionic Chart for the US has a 5th house Moon- a most creative moon- being directly opposed by the Sag Eclipse. It is time to come up with some creative solutions. The failure of the Supercommittee this week and the shutting down of OWS are showing us that these kinds of solutions- while they might have made us more aware of the scale of the problems- are not going to bring us the creative change we need. “If we’re gonna survive we’re gonna have to get a little bit crazy.'(Jupiter).

One last note- The chart for the beginning of the Saros series is a powerful one- Mars at 0 degrees Aries-whoa! And note the North Node at the ‘Hitler’ degree: are we going to be tricked into going to war again- a diversionary tactic as old as recorded history?

  2. Oops moment- Saros 123 has Mars at o degrees PISCES- still strong though. Uranus is also strong in the chart- it’s even stronger today.

  3. An extremely knowledgeable and well-written article with some interesting observations. But hey, the 99% also do not live in the USA, so how about TMA remembering that and giving us the global energetic point of view more than just being a US-centric stance!?!

  4. I appreciate the contents of article. I offer my comments as follows :-

THE Transit of Pluto in Sag.being sing of religion dogma, in 1994 and solar eclipse in 1993 brings forces of fundamental tendency in the world has increased which culminated on war on terror which ruin economy of USA on one hand and on the other Taliban are looking tired after fighting terror war. Now Eclipse is occurring in SAG again after 18 years it may be possible that from the ashes of war new power center will be emerged just like China and India.
Furthermore, Sag being sign of banking we see subprime crisis. I think this eclipe will definitely break monopoly tendency of banking sector few banks captures huge business there is no competition. Perhaps banking will be changed and new trend based on compitition will be emerged.
Perhaps Pluto being transit in Capricorn, sign of government, state and business, will trnsform throughout world and movement aginst exploitation and malpractice corruption will be seen. I will be waiting for your comments.

  5. Hi everyone, thanks for reading and commenting.

    Carl, great observations.

    firdousali, may it be so!

Charmaine, I understand and appreciate your desire for a global perspective. I’m sort of laughing out loud here because my perception is that the biggest frustration I’ve received from editors have been concerns about lack of focus and trying to do too much. So please understand writer’s have to make choices
I do feel that I made the first six paragraphs as well as the interps of the eclipse charts pretty universal. Certainly, I acknowledge that the conflagrations are global in nature, both here and in my blog post referenced and linked to in the final paragraph.

Since that post, the global fire has caught on in the US, in the form of the Occupy movements…and since the US is one of the few developed nations where income inequality has been steadily growing for such a long time, that is where I chose to focus this time.

  6. Thank you for your insights, Gary.

Karl – the spin has just started with accusations hurled at Iran of nuclear weapons of mass destruction. No facts support this – but it worked to get us to invade Iraq. I suspect the military cuts slated by the failure of the congressional super committee will now be revoked. And that will entail many more cuts in supporting the poor, the destitute and the most vulnerable among us. I hope I’m wrong.

  7. Gary,

Thank you once again for a mentally stimulating article; I always learn something new from you. Your readers’ comments are interesting as well and I have an observation to add, although it only applies to the U.S.

When you mentioned Mayor Bloomburg and the rich congress members not having anything to wave a flag about, a flag with the word ‘imbalance’ started waving in my head. The fact that it is the 99% bringing attention to the 1% made me check the U.S. Sibly chart’s Venus (balance) and then to check the progression of that planet to date.

Progressed Sibly Venus has recently been conjunct natal Chiron (increase awareness through pain) at 20 Aries in the U.S. Sibly chart. Natal Aries Chiron then opposes natal Juno (equality of relationship) in Libra bringing this inherent aspect to life along with the timing of the other major (wakeup) cycles. Makes me wonder what was going on when the progressed Venus was conjunct the progressed Chiron (around 17 Aries).

This re-affirms my confidence in the Sibly chart, however, I will be watching for any sign that the Scorpionic America chart’s Moon (people) gets directly impacted by this Sagittarian eclipse.

Looking forward to your coverage of the total lunar eclipse!

  8. I enjoyed your article, Gary, and appreciate you writing for TMA’s blog. Just want to inform readers that David Solte first published his two-part argument for the Scorpionic America chart in the Feb. 1992 and March 1992 issues of TMA. He then ran more follow-up articles in 1992-1997, including an article on the ACG Map of the Scorpionic America chart in the Apr/May 1993 issue. The Moon-IC line runs along the longitude of Detroit, MI and Tampa, FL. The Moon-MC line runs through Myanmar and central China. The Moon-ASC line runs through Cape Town, Nigeria, Algeria, and Spain/Portugal. So if this eclipse activates the US Moon, we may see those lines activated. David eventually published a book with much of that info pulled together; not sure on where the book is currently available.

  9. Karl,

The Saros Series 123 (April 1074) Mars at 0 Pisces is a powerful one. It is the same degree Chiron occupies in the solar eclipse chart (11/25/11). Transiting Chiron stationed direct on 11/10/11 and a few hours later transiting Mars entered Virgo. Their opposition was exact on 11/12/11. This aspect can be linked to the Penn State scandal.

Sandusky’s natal Uranus-Mars conjunction is at 4 and 6 degrees of Gemini. In the Saros 123 chart Mercury, representing young people, is at 5 Gemini.

Sandusky also has a natal opposition between Chiron (15 Virgo 9 rx)and the asteroid Child (15 Pisces 45) which is square the present-day nodes of the Moon.

Jerry Sandusky born January 26,1944, Washington, PA using 12 Noon for chart

  10. Belatedly, I see that the chart for Saros 123 (1074) has Chiron at 15 degrees and Pluto at 14 degrees of Pisces which Sandusky’s asteroid Child conjuncts. Amazing.

  11. Addendum: Brady notes in her Eagle and the Lark (pg 227) that it was under this series (Nasa’s Solar Saros 123) http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsaros/SEsaros123.html
that we saw the publication of Copernicus’ “Revolutions” in 1543 and Newton’s “Principia” in 1687 -the latter of which happened following an eclipse right at the very heart or midpoint of this series…

It seems that in the 1074 chart Saturn in Sagittarius (trine the eclipse ruler Venus in early Aries on the World axis) represents enduring publications which erode (Neptune) the stranglehold of longstanding views based on fragmented or incomplete knowledge (Gemini)

In the subsequent eclipses (Feb 3, 1543 and May 11, 1687) we see conjunctions and oppositions to the early Aries and mid-Taurus positions which hold the power of the Mundane or World axis

With Uranus holding the World axis in this chart it looks like we could hope for some sort of publication coming from or inspired by the Occupy movements (or other current revolutionary movements) or perhaps a supreme court decision whose backlash has the same power to galvanize change as the aforementioned publications, similar to the Dred Scott decision (Scott was born in the year 1795 -which also saw an eclipse of this same series)
