Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius has gone suddenly from international renown as an athlete to being on trial for the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. (1) He has a remarkable life story and was the subject of an article with lots of biographical details in the New York Times last year. (2)

Pistorius was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 22, 1986. (I am using 10:30 a.m., rated A at Astrodatabank.) (3)

Oscar Pistorius natal

Everyone’s life is layered and multi-faceted; I am just looking at some of the astrological points that suggest the shocking events in this tragic story.

Oscar Pistorius’ natal Sun at 29º44’ Scorpio is exactly on the Uranus/Pluto midpoint (29º42’). (UR/PL=SU). Ebertin writes: “The urge for independence and freedom, untiring creative work, the tendency to make the highest demands on one’s physical energy, strong emotional tension. Over-excitement of the nerves, a breakdown, a catastrophe.” (4) (We might say that the current Uranus – Pluto square has torn his life asunder.)

In the natal horoscope, Pistorius also has Saturn at 10º45’ Sagittarius exactly on the midpoint of Sun and Uranus at 10º28’ Sagittarius (SU/UR = SA). About this connection, Ebertin writes: “Rebellion against limitation of freedom, inhibitions and difficulties are overcome through extraordinary efforts. Sudden separation, sudden loss, a separation from another person carried out in haste.” (5)

Transiting Saturn is at 11º Scorpio at the Midheaven of Pistorius’ natal chart as the eyes of the world are upon him.

There is one more midpoint from the natal I’d like to mention: the Moon/Midheaven midpoint (21º13’ Virgo) is exactly on Uranus (21º13’ Sagittarius)(MO/MC = UR). Again, from Ebertin: “An unusual degree of emotional excitability, irritability, nervousness. Emotional crises, upsets through members of the female sex, an unusual emotional state.” (6)

Transiting Mars on the date of the shooting was at 9º Pisces; Pistorius’ solar arc directed Ascendant is 9º18’ Pisces.

Pistorius, solar arc to February 14

The directed Ascendant at 9º Pisces has exactly come to his natal Mars/Uranus midpoint at 24º21’ Capricorn (on the 45º dial) (MA/UR=ASC). Ebertin writes about this: “An excitable person with the inclination to commit acts of violence. An upsetting event, accident, physical injury, (arrest).”

Enough of this sad story for now.

Have a good week everyone.

  1. I simply want to say how apt the midpoints you mentioned are to the situation.

    • Thanks Iris, rather chilling I thought..

  2. The answers to everything are all around us….if we have the eyes to see.

  3. Hi Mary,
I am not an astrologer though I’ve loved astrology’s depth, guidance and wisdom all of my life. I am a psychotherapist and specialist in relationship studies. I found your article stunning in its fascinating focus on “the relative midpoints”. I wonder if there is anything uplifting –something to learn and value from the darkness that has befallen this pair of star crossed lovers. Are they lost to each other forever?
What do we make of this? What is it like for Riva? Can Oscar go on living? Could you tell us more?
    With gratitude,

    Deborah

    • Hello Deborah,

      Thank you for commenting..

I have my personal beliefs that all can healed and much will/can be learned through life’s many hardships..

I do not want to comment further about this event, but found it such a strong display of a particular astrological technique..

      May she rest in peace..

I will find some other astrologer’s comments and add some links when I have a chance..

  4. I wonder what Reeva Steenkamp’s chart looks like in comparison? What clues would it give to that fateful dance.

  5. Thanks for posting this, midpoints are always so informative. Strangely I kept thinking of OJ and Nicole Brown Simpson …. because their charts were so intwined. But all in all, the higher spiritual issues aside, this is pure tragedy of the Greeks….

  6. I wrote this about OJ/Nicole BEFORE I read Ed Tamplin’s piece! is it really 19 years ago? OMG.

  7. Mary, excellent article. Your work uncovering the midpoints is profound and chilling. Thank you for doing this.

    • thanks Claudia..

  8. This has sent me back to Ebertin……chillingly accurate.

  9. Mary, this was fascinating! Thanks so much; I obviously don’t know enough about midpoints or Ebertin!

There was a lot of relevant PNA (personal named asteroids)activity as well, but I thought asteroid Valentine’s placement to be among the most poetic, if such a word can be used for this type of awful tragedy.

At 29 Pisces on Valentine’s Day, asteroid Valentine was approaching Uranus, ruling shootings, at 6 Aries; it was also semisquare to Venus, ruling lovers, at 15 Aquarius, which was itself conjunct asteroid Requiem, named for the funeral mass for the dead, at 9 Aquarius.
Valentine is further sextile to asteroid Atropos, named for the Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death, at 27 Taurus.

Valentine in Pistorius’ chart is at 18 Aquarius (with Venus applying at the shooting from 15 Aquarius)in square to natal TNO (Trans-Neptunian Object)Ixion, named for the first murderer in Greek mythology, at 20 Scorpio. In Steenkamp’s chart, Valentine at 6 Leo conjoins natal Mars, ruling violent death and sexual relationships, at 3 Leo (itself exactly on Pistorius’ Moon). Valentine also squares natal asteroid Osiris, named for the Egyptian god of the dead, at 10 Taurus, and exactly opposes Pistorius’ natal Osiris at 6 Aquarius.

Just one small example of an amazing web of connection between these two.

  10. I found it intriguing that on the day of the incident transiting Pluto was on the midpoint of transiting Mars and Saturn, with the transiting Sun 45 deg from Pluto. Ebertin describes Pluto= Mars/Sat: “brutality, the rage or fury of destruction…. bodily injury or harm (murder, the death of many people)”.

Pluto as the focal point of this midpoint picture was Sesquiquadrate Reeva’s Sun and perhaps just within orb of Semi-Square to Oscar’s Mars (thus apparently triggering the Sun/Mars Opposition in their synastry).

Transiting Mars was furthermore Square Oscar’s Saturn which was itself on the midpoint of transiting Saturn and Pluto, with, one would assume, very similar implications to the interpretation quoted above.

  11. Much thanks to Richard Fidler for pointing out the Mars/Saturn relationship. Ebertin labels that combination a death and dying configuration.
Did I also see a long rectangle across Oscar’s birth chart—i.e. the North and South Nodes at corners in relationship to Uranus and Chiron at the other corners?
Would someone conversant with rectangles comment on this geological construct, please?
The best that I can come away with is a fated from the past (South Node) and into the present (North Node) wounding and healing (Chiron) by some sudden and horrible shocking event (Uranus).
We need an evolutional astrologer and perhaps
a hypnotherapist doing past-life regession to get at this awful story.

  12. This is an excellent synopsis of the Pistorius horoscope given the ongoing dynamics and solar arc directions. Mary you have made Ebertin’s dramatic pictures come alive. His birth Sun at the longitude of the fixed star Toliman adds to the testimony. The squaring of Oscar and Reeva’s respective Suns and his Mars opposition to hers was also a telling factor.

    • Thanks for the comment, Ed..
